Club Members Enjoy Taking Part in Nuts Corner Annual Charity Cycle
- Categorized in: Archive, News Items
A number of Athlone Sub Aqua Club members, having dressed in some very strange attire, substituted their diving gear for a bicycle to take part in the Nuts Corner Annual Fancy Dress Charity Cycle on Sunday 11th July 2010.
Amongst the very large and colourful contingent of cyclists (including Arabs, gangsters, convicts, police officers, firemen, hippies, aristocrats, the Tin Man, Mr. T and Santa Claus himself making a rare out of season appearance) that left Nuts Corner to cycle to Glasson were club members Brian Duffy, Eric Nugent, John McDonnell, Donal Quinn and Pat Wynne. Wearing Pirate, Robin Hood, Australian and Mexican outfits the sub aqua lads were very disappointed to hear a number of on-lookers draw the inevitable comparisons with Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas - they maintain that they are much better looking!! Jim Campbell performed the difficult role of Chef D’Equipe for the Athlone Sub Aqua Club cycling team following in the club van to deal with any breakdowns (to either man or machine!). David Loran took great satisfaction in producing photographic evidence for the club’s Facebook site! All participants enjoyed their cycle, well earned refreshments in Glasson and the craic at a BBQ that was held in Nuts Corner later that evening.
This charity event was held for the benefit of Athlone Chernobyl Aid Project, Athlone Sub Aqua Club, Athlone Old Folks Welfare & Leisure Society, Athlone Special Olympics Club and Saint Hilda’s Services. Athlone Sub Aqua Club members are requested to return all outstanding sponsored cards and monies collected to the club’s Chairman, Brian Duffy as soon as possible.
