Local Artist Presents Portrait to Athlone Sub Aqua Club

On Wednesday, 7th April, 2010, local artist Jim Reddy presented a portrait to Athlone Sub Aqua Club in appreciation for its assistance during the recent January floods.

The portrait is of the Athlone Diver boat and four club members Stewart McMickan, Derry McMahon, Ollie Fallon and John Kenny approaching Jim’s barge on the River Shannon where he resides and is set against a backdrop of a chilly, misty, January afternoon.

During the devastating floods at the beginning of the year, Jim, having been stranded on his barge for fourteen days, contacted Athlone Sub Aqua Club when food and other supplies were running low. The club’s members brought Jim back to shore where he could stock up on his required supplies before returning him safely to his barge.

When asked about the portrait, Jim said that it was his way of thanking the club for coming to his aid during his ordeal. Jim’s portrait will occupy a prominent place in Athlone Sub Aqua Club’s clubhouse. Jim has previously had a number of exhibitions of his work in the Dean Crowe theatre and other venues in the local area. Jim is hoping to have another exhibition of some of his latest pieces coming up in the near future.
